International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR)
The International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR) was founded in Berlin on 1 October 1909 as the "Internationale Vereinigung für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie" and renamed the "International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy" in 1933.
The IVR is the oldest, largest and most important association in the field of legal and social philosophy. The founding chairmen were Josef Kohler, Fritz Berolzheimer and Carl Fürstenberg. The founding patron was the entrepreneur and social politician Wilhelm Merton, who co-founded the commercial college and later the University of Frankfurt/Main. In 1959, at the 2nd World Congress of the IVR in Vienna after the Second World War, it was decided to split the IVR into national sections. Today the IVR has over 40 national member associations with more than 2000 members all over the world, each of which is organised differently. The overall association is a registered association under German law with headquarters in Wiesbaden. According to its statutes, its purpose is the cultivation and promotion of the philosophy of law and social philosophy on a national and international level without excluding any scientific direction. In order to fulfil this purpose, the association organises World Congresses every two years. The World Presidium informs about its current work by means of regular newsletters.
The scientific organ of the IVR, the Archives for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (ARSP), founded in 1907 by Josef Kohler and Fritz Berolzheimer, is considered the most important publication in its field. Contributions are published in four languages - German, English, French and Spanish.
Among the national member associations of the IVR, the German Section occupies a leading position. The East and West German Sections, which have existed since the beginning of the 1960s, merged in 1990. At present they have almost four hundred members, who are also members of the overall association. The German section of the IVR is a registered non-profit association for the promotion of science.
At the beginning of the 1990s, the Young Forum on Legal Philosophy (JFR) was founded from the IVR, an initiative mainly by assistants and collaborators from the fields of philosophy of law and sociology of law, which since then has held a number of independent conferences in the German-speaking world.
